Hair now took on a whole new medium ~ photography. As Steven observed, "How well they compliment each other". He realized that he couldn't shoot without doing hair; and couldn't do hair without shooting. They became inseparable expressions of his passions, and as his career ascended, he would begin to hone the other aesthetic skills involving makeup, styling, hair coloring, lighting, location scouting… anything that would enhance the image of the final "work of art."

After landing his first stint at Salon Mark Harris(formerly Ecocentrix), Steven's hairstyling & hair coloring techniques would achieve national acclaim. Two times, Best of Boston Winner (best hair cut '96, best hair color '98) and Allure Magazine's Best Colorist Boston would solidify Steven as one of Boston's most talented stylist. His signature hair coloring technique the "PVS" Phat Vertical Slice still remains emulated by stylist everywhere.

Steven's aesthetic talents, (some innate, many honed and developed) gave him the ability to look at someone and tell them what is going to look good and why its going to look good. These same skills apply to capturing a beautiful image as developing a repoire with a client and making them feel at ease, is essential in connecting to that beautiful image you are trying to capture both in everyday life and on film. As a hairdresser, there is no better feeling than making someone smile from ear to ear, tingling about the way their hair looks. With a photograph, that smile and look is immortalized forever.

Steven Doherty's Landscape Architecture career took a sudden about face upon completing his first year at UMass. After a couple of haircuts at the Amherst Dellaria Salon and extensive discussions with a well known stylist, the seed was sewn for a new career in hairdressing, much to the amazement and chagrin of his friends and family, he entered cosmetology school.

As fate would have it, a John Dellaria Salon (“JD”) would open in nearby Framingham and his hairdressing career was off and running. Dellaria’s status as one of the world’s best hairdressers would provide invaluable educational and hair show experience for Steven. After stints in Boston at 33 Newbury St, and in New York City, and numerous photo shoots as a hair stylist, Steven realized his passions fro photography as well.. “The only way to capture beautiful hair is to photograph it.”
